The School of Government and the North Carolina Judicial College are excited to announce the addition of Emily Turner to the faculty. Emily joined the School in July 2021 and will be the lead faculty member working with district court judges, superior court judges, clerks of court, and magistrates on legal and practical aspects of conducting civil trials and contested hearings with a particular focus on the North Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure.
“I was drawn to the courts group at the School of Government because it is such a unique opportunity to engage in service-oriented, practical academic scholarship that is grounded in the realities of our court system and all those who participate in it,” Emily said. “I am incredibly excited to be able to meet and collaborate with the dedicated and knowledgeable public servants throughout our state.”
A native North Carolinian, Emily joins the School after five years with the North Carolina Justice Center. She litigated state-focused impact cases at the trial and appellate levels as the inaugural Leslie J. Winner Fellow in Public Interest and Civil Rights, and later, as a permanent staff attorney for the center. Prior to joining the Justice Center, she clerked for Hon. Srikanth Srinivasan on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Emily began her career working in the nonprofit sector at Ipas in Chapel Hill and Centro de Enlace in Burnsville. Those experiences granted her an acute understanding of the importance of ensuring academic scholarship is connected to and informed by people’s lived realities.
“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience the courtroom and our legal system from a variety of vantage points, because that experience enables me to more completely assess the real-world effects of civil procedure, policies, and law,” Emily said. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to take time and think about our court system at a comprehensive and systematic level.”
A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Emily received her J.D. summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, where she also served as senior editor on the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
Emily’s telephone number is 919-843-2032 and her email address is eturner@sog.unc.edu. Please join us in extending her a warm welcome.
