• Celebrating John Rubin’s Contribution to Public Defense

Today, we want to highlight one of the people who truly brings the School of Government’s mission to life. After more than 30 years of service to the UNC School of Government, Professor John Rubin is retiring. He leaves an extraordinary legacy as a revered teacher, trusted advisor, renowned author, and mentor. As the first faculty member to work on public defense in North Carolina, John created the Public Defense Education program.

The program has reached thousands of defenders through an annual curriculum of law courses, a library of reference materials, and case consultations.

As we celebrate John’s retirement, we invite you to help us sustain programs like Public Defense Education for years to come. Please click here if you would like to contribute.

Timothy Heinle joined the School of Government in 2020. Timothy works as part of the School’s Public Defense Education program, focusing primarily on juvenile abuse, neglect, and dependency, and incompetency and guardianship matters.
